I took this photo in my mom's garden, the reason i took it is because there signs that spring has arrived. The purple flowers are crocuses or its scientific name crocus sativus, and is one of the early flowers of spring. Also, the snow drop flowers that are white with green stems also pop up in early spring. Its scientific name is Galanthus. Sadly, there are no leaves on the small tree but they should start coming very soon!
Today I made a bird feeder out of a plastic bottle and wooden spoons. I hung it on a tree and waited. It has been hours and no birds. The bird I am most expecting is the American Robin or Turdus migratorius Hopefully they will come by soon. -E.O.This is a moth orchid flower in my living room. It's scientific name is "phalaenopsis". This orchid has very elegant pedals and design. This flower also has a ability to grow brand new phals along it's stem. It's scientific name means comes from the Latin word "phal", meaning "moth" and "opsis" meaning "appearance". the scientist who came up with this scientific name thought that the orchid looked like two moths in flight. Lastly, moth orchids can get sunburned just like humans do if they get exposed to too much light, making this flower very delicate. -DS
This is my neighbors chicken coop and these are the seeds they grow to feed them. They use seeds they gather up from Maine in the spring. This way the chickens get more nutrients. But recently i noticed that the chickens where getting sick so I found out this can lead to producing bad eggs and less eggs. BP
A Sugar Walnut tree can live to 70-90 years, row up to 80 feet, and is the state tree of New York. Turns out I've had one in my backyard since before I was born. Every year this tree sheds its leaves during fall and is deciduous by mid-winter. You can find these trees all around New England, into the Mid-Atlantic, and even in parts of the Mid-West, but, they are most commonly found in places with heavy snowy winters. A Sugar Maple can also be classified as Acer Saccarum. TCK
This is a American Holly Bush. It's scientific name is "IIex opaca" . This bush's leaves do not fall all year round so it is deciduous. It can grow little red berries in the winter too. Also, it has a cool shade of light/dark green. I noticed how prickly the Holly Bush's leaves are! - DS
The Rhododendron, or Rhododendron ferrugineum Is a beautiful tree like plant, that usually has big leather like leaves with white or pink blossom clusters. It is sort of like a rose tree. However, in the winter Rhododendron leaves curl up to protect themselves, don't worry though they will uncurl when the warm weather comes back. It is amazing to see how things in nature can, on command respond to changes to protect itself. -WA
This is a black walnut tree or a Juglans nigra. This picture was taken from my backyard. They drop a fruit that kind of looks like an apple. Since it is winter, you cannot see the leaves on the tree. This means it's a coniferous tree. I have recently learned that the tree's wood is very valuable. I think this is due to the color of the tree's wood (black) or the rarity of it. CB
This afternoon I was walking in the woods and I saw some footprints in the icy snow. The footprints were made by a deer (Codocoileus virginianus) i think, it wasn't very clear. Now that there is snow on the ground we will be able to see all sorts of footprints on the ground. -E.O.
